Team USA Goes for Gold

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — It has been an Olympics full of highs and lows for Team USA.

USA currently stands in fifth place with 8 medals. They fall behind to leader Norway with 19, Germany with 15, Netherlands with 13, and Canada with 13.

According to USA Today Sports, “Friday in Pyeongchang can’t be classified as anything other than a disappointment for the United States.” Since they’re 15 hours ahead of Central time, we have to rely on reports to keep us up-to-date until we can watch the competition in Primetime.

Perhaps the biggest surprise was 22-year-old alpine ski racer, Mikaela Shiffrin who did not medal in slalom. Shiffrin finished with the Gold in the 2018 Sochi olympics in slalom when she was only 18 and she has been dominate ever since. She has won five of seven World Cup slalom races along with a city event and a parallel slalom. Shiffrin said she threw up before the racing began, saying her nerves and the emotional high of her giant slalom gold may have resulted in her nerves that led her to getting sick.

However, things were not all downhill on the snow for team USA. After twelve years from the date of winning his first Olympic gold medal, Shaun White won his third in men’s halfpipe competition. White’s win was gold medal No. 100 for the United State all-time in the Winter Olympics.

And White was not the only Olympic gold medalists in Halfpipe in Pyeongchang.

After being too young to compete in the Sochi Olympics, 17-year-old Chloe Kim dominates the women’s halfpipe to capture her first gold medal; and America fell in-love with her hilarious personality.

On Saturday, Lindsey Vonn will make her comeback from missing the Sochi Games with a knee injury. She debuts in the Pyeongchang Games in the super-G at the speed course in Jeongseon.

And on the ice, Nathan Chen who is the US national champion figure skater was expected to dominate in Pyeongchang, but instead made mistakes on all of his jumps and finished 17th in competition.

However, the United States men’s hockey team picked up a key 2-1 win against Slovakia to get its medal hopes back on track.

There are still many events left to happen with USA in favor of winning the Gold; so here’s to hoping the USA climbs the medal rankings.
