John Kermit Davis Jr. was born in Leakesville, MS and after graduating high school, he attended Phillips Community College in Arkansas and played basketball. After his second year, Davis transferred to Mississippi State University where he played for two more years and earn both his bachelor and master’s degree.
After several coaching stops, Kermit Davis was given the opportunity to become the head coach of the Middle Tennessee State University Blue Raiders Basketball Team. In his first four seasons (2002-2006), Davis lead the Blue Raiders to winning seasons and was named Sun Belt Coach of the Year in 2003. In 2010, Davis led his team to their first post-season tournament. Since then, Davis has lead the Blue Raiders to appearances in the 2012 NIT Tournament, 2013 NCAA Tournament, 2015 CollegeInsider.com Tournament, and in 2016 made the NCAA Tournament by winning the Conference USA Tournament. As the 15th seed in the 2016 NCAA Tournament, the MTSU Blue Raiders upset #2 seed Michigan State 90-81 and advanced to the 2nd round but would later be defeated by #10 seed Syracuse.

In the 2017, Coach Davis led the Blue Raiders to their best regular season with an overall record of 31-5 and a 17-1 in conference record.
In the 2017 NCAA Tournament, MTSU entered as the 12th seed in the South bracket and was paired with 5th seed Minnesota. The Blue Raiders won in what was considered the tournament’s first big upset over Minnesota 81-72 and moved on to play 4th seed Butler. However, the Blue Raiders lost to Butler 74-65 which eliminated them from the tournament in the 2nd round.

In March 2017 Head Coach Kermit Davis was named the C-USA Coach of the Year and National Association of Basketball Coaches District 11 Coach of the Year and on March 24th, MTSU announced that Coach Davis agreed to a new 7 year contract extension through the 2023-24 season.
