Titans vs. Chiefs: Week 7 Primer

From one top offense to another, the Tennessee Titans (4-2) play their second game in six days at Nissan Stadium on Sunday, as they host the Kansas City Chiefs (3-3).

Have you gotten over that thrilling 34-31 victory against the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football? If you haven’t, that is understandable, but the Titans themselves had to quickly transition into a week of preparation for a Kansas City team that they have been involved with for some memorable endings the last few seasons.

The core of the Chiefs offense remains pretty similar from years past, with quarterback Patrick Mahomes targeting playmakers such as Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce, but some uncharacteristic turnovers is something we have not seen much of since Mahomes has been a starter. Although it has not looked pretty at times, it is still an offense that is capable of putting points on the scoreboard in bunches.

On defense is where the Chiefs have struggled the most. Giving up 29.3 points per game, Kansas City allows 6.71 yards per play, the most in the NFL. Before giving up 13 points to Washington last week, the fewest points scored against the Chiefs this season was 29 by Cleveland in Week 1.

Even while balancing an unthinkable amount of injuries, the Titans have continued to produce on offense and the defense is playing well. The pressure the defense is applying on opposing quarterbacks has been very disruptive and is key with all the injuries in the secondary.

There is also a running back named Derrick Henry who has been pretty good as well. Just throwing that out there.

Chiefs vs. Titans has resulted in some fascinating finishes the last couple times they have met and it seems as if this could turn into another exciting Sunday afternoon at Nissan Stadium.

Three Things To Watch

Injury Report – This is the first time in a while that you could say an opponent has more names on the injury report than the Titans do. Although that might be the case, there are still some significant contributors for the Titans that are dealing with injuries. LT Taylor Lewan left Monday night’s game with a concussion and has not practiced this week, while WR Julio Jones was able to participate during Thursday’s practice in a limited capacity. Caleb Farley and Kristian Fulton were both placed on IR this week, so Chris Jackson dealing with an ankle injury is something to keep an eye on. For the Chiefs, it seems the biggest question mark injury-wise might be Tyreek Hill. Hill did not participate in practice on Wednesday or Thursday as he deals with a quad injury. The names listed on the inactives list that will be released around 10:30 a.m. CT on Sunday could be quite impactful for both teams.

One-on-One Matchups – Both defenses in this matchup rank in the bottom half of the league in passing yards per game. With both offenses showcasing dynamic playmakers, how will both secondaries fare? The abundance of injuries for the Titans in the secondary is a concern, especially when the speedster Tyreek Hill comes to town. When playing man coverage, who is given the honor of covering one of the fastest players in the NFL? But on the other hand, the Titans dominating ground game helped free up the back end of the Bills defense last week, which allowed A.J. Brown to have his best performance of the season. Derrick Henry’s dominance requires for loaded boxes, which puts a lot of pressure on opposing secondaries. Both defenses will be presented matchup challenges on Sunday.

Turnover Battle – One huge difference about the Kansas City offense from the last couple seasons is the turnover problems the Chiefs have had. The Chiefs have turned the ball over 14 times this season and have had multiple turnovers in four of their six games. A turnover ratio of -8 ranks Kansas City 31st in the league in that category. While a problem early in the season, the Titans have done a much better job holding onto the football recently and have even forced a couple takeaways of their own. Winning the turnover battle would be huge for either team, but cashing in and turning those turnovers into points could be the difference in this game.

Did You Know?

  • Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid is just 2-8 against the Titans in his coaching career. Reid was 0-4 against the Titans as the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles and is 2-4 in six opportunities with the Chiefs. Before the AFC Championship Game victory over the Titans in 2020, Tennessee was the only team in the NFL that Reid had not defeated two or more times.
  • OLB Harold Landry has taken his play to another level this season. Currently with 6.5 sacks, Landry is tied for 3rd in the league in sacks. He has at least a half a sack in four consecutive games, a sack in three straight games, and has recorded back-to-back performances with two sacks. In the last eight games (the 2020 regular season finale, the playoff game against Baltimore, and the first six games of this season), Landry has 9.5 sacks, more than any other player in the league during that period of time.
  • Both quarterbacks in this matchup have been clutch in crunch time in recent history. From 2019 to 2020, both Ryan Tannehill and Patrick Mahomes have a 110.3 passer rating in the 4th quarter when a game is within one score, leading or trailing. They both have 11 passing touchdowns and one interception in this specific scenario. The two quarterbacks are tied for second in the NFL with their identical passer ratings, trailing Deshaun Watson.
